In the Kitchen With...

In the Kitchen with Lanie and Xyra

Pennsylvania Dutch Treat Teaser

Hi! This week has been filled with winter weather, mostly slushy (blech!), so I thought I'd help Xyra do some baking. She wanted to test a theory about our oven so chose a simple recipe that really can't be messed up too badly. It's a family favorite; a Pennsylvania Dutch treat...AP Cake.

AP Cake can also be called Apeas or Apey Cake. Some even call it Hard Tack, but that is way off. Real hard tack that the Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers ate was not nearly as tasty as this.

There are several different recipes too. Some call for egg, others do not (ours doesn't). Some sprinkle sugar on top, others do not. Our recipe is really simple all you need is flour, brown sugar, baking soda, butter, and buttermilk (or sour milk).

Check out the entire process over at Tea Time with Melody Q.

What do you like to do when you can't go outside?

Best wishes,
Lanie
